After diagnosing a cat with diabetes mellitus and beginning insulin therapy, continue to monitor the cat in the months following to achieve and maintain regulation.
The primary objective of insulin therapy is to reduce or eliminate the clinical signs of diabetes without causing hypoglycemia and to maintain good general health for the cat. Using a glucose curve in-clinic, or at home, will help you monitor your patient’s glucose concentration.
To assist with monitoring the cat, ask your client to monitor clinical signs and report any abnormalities. In addition, encourage client consistency in managing feeding and insulin injections for their cat with diabetes.
Additionally, you may need to impress upon the client the importance of consistency in managing their cat with diabetes. This includes diet and feeding schedules, injecting Caninsulin® with consistent timing and proper exercise.
